OSRAM and South Korea's Seoul Semiconductor have signed a cross-licensing agreement on patents for visible light LEDs. The agreement includes patents owned by Osram's subsidiary and the well-known LED manufacturer Osram Opto Semiconductors. White LED and package related patents are also included in the scope of the cross-licensing agreement. In the future, the two parties will not only use each other's patents, but when there is a patent dispute with the third party in this agreement, Seoul Semiconductor will jointly protect the rights with Osram.
According to this cross-licensing agreement, for example, in terms of white LEDs, Seoul Semiconductor can use the wavelength conversion technology owned by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. The wavelength conversion technique here is a technique in which a blue LED chip of an InGaN-based semiconductor and a phosphor material are combined to form a white LED. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has patented this white LED to a number of LED manufacturers such as ROHM, Citizen Electronics and Taiwan Everlight Electronics. On the other hand, according to this agreement, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors can use the packaging technology owned by Seoul Semiconductor.
In the LED industry, Nichia Chemical Industry, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and Cree are important white LED patent holders. On May 9, 2006, Seoul Semiconductor signed a cross-licensing agreement with Cree of the United States to provide white LED patents. In addition to this agreement, Seoul Semiconductor has signed a cross-licensing agreement with two of the companies. In the case of the Japanese chemical industry, Seoul Semiconductor is currently in the United States.
